Sergio Perez has officially parted ways with Red Bull Racing, concluding a four-year tenure marked by significant achievements and challenges. The announcement, made on Wednesday, confirmed Perez’s exit ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season, following a disappointing performance that saw him finish eighth in the Drivers’ standings and contribute to Red Bull losing the Constructors’ title.
Initially, Perez had signed a contract extension in June 2024, but his form deteriorated significantly in the latter half of the season. He scored only 49 points in the final 18 races and failed to reach the podium since April’s Chinese Grand Prix.
Team principal Christian Horner expressed gratitude for Perez’s contributions during his time at Red Bull, acknowledging his role in securing multiple Grand Prix wins and two Constructors’ Championships.
In his farewell statement, Perez reflected on his time with Red Bull, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful for the past four years with Red Bull Racing and for the opportunity to race with such an amazing team.” He hammered on his appreciation for the team and its supporters, particularly those from Mexico, and hinted at future endeavors beyond Formula 1.
The decision to part ways was not unexpected; Perez had faced mounting pressure throughout the season due to his inability to match teammate Max Verstappen’s performance. Verstappen amassed nearly three times Perez’s points total en route to his fourth consecutive World Championship.
Despite a promising start to the 2024 season, including four podium finishes in five races, Perez struggled to maintain consistency as competition intensified.
With Perez’s departure, Red Bull could possibly announce Liam Lawson as his replacement. Lawson has shown potential during his stints with Red Bull’s junior team and is expected to step up as Verstappen’s new teammate for the upcoming season. This transition opens up a coveted seat at Red Bull, a development that would have a large impact on their 2025 performance.
