Verstappen: I knew Norris’ time would come

Max Verstappen has resurfaced a statement he made referring to Lando Norris at the end of last season. The Red Bull driver had told Norris, after he had missed out on the World Championship, that his time would come.

Verstappen believes that Norris has everything it takes to win this season’s title.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s race at Las Vegas, the four-time world champion said, “What I said last year, I meant – simple as that. There’s nothing that I lied about.

“It’s quite clear, right, this season. Sometimes, you just need to be a bit patient and wait for your moment.”

Norris currently leads the drivers’ standings, after taking the spot from teammate Oscar Piastri, who he leads by 24 points. The British driver had come so close to winning the title last year but was bested by close friend Verstappen.

He started this season on a positive note, winning some of the early races, but had to fall behind as Piastri picked up more wins.

The contribution of the two drivers led to McLaren winning the Constructors’ title for the second year in a row. If things go according to plan, the team may also produce this year’s title winner.

Verstappen’s comment comes amid a tough season, where he has had to endure a car that has not performed as well as previous ones. Although he has shortened the gap between himself and the leading drivers, he is still not in the clear as to winning this season’s title.

His case is not helped by the fact that his teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, is a no-show most times, and is currently the reason why Red Bull might finish outside the top three in this season’s constructors’ championship.

The Dutchman’s faith in the team remains strong, however, as he has made no hints of leaving and, per his current contract, might be with them till 2028.

Although Norris won’t go home with the title if he wins this weekend’s race, a victory would no doubt strengthen his chances.  A one-two finish with Norris and Piastri will eliminate Verstappen from the title race, making it an all-McLaren affair.
