Verstappen to race for Red Bull in 2026

Max Verstappen has officially confirmed that he will race for Red Bull Racing in the 2026 Formula 1 season, putting an end to months of speculation surrounding his future in the sport.

Amidst ongoing rumours linking him to Mercedes, Verstappen made it clear ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix that he is fully committed to continuing with the team that has been central to his successes in Formula 1.

The Dutch driver holds a contract with Red Bull that extends until the end of 2028. However, there had been considerable uncertainty about whether he would activate an exit clause that was contingent on his position in the drivers’ championship around mid-season.

Verstappen’s strong performance this season, including securing a spot in the top three of the championship standings before the summer break, has effectively nullified that clause, reinforcing his commitment to Red Bull for 2026.

Earlier this year, Verstappen’s future became one of the hottest topics in F1 due to team changes and internal challenges within Red Bull.

The departure of long-serving team principal Christian Horner, following a period of turmoil, coupled with Red Bull’s recent struggles in maintaining their competitive edge, fueled speculation of Verstappen considering a switch.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff even confirmed that conversations involving Verstappen had taken place, adding to the rumours of a potential move. Yet, Verstappen consistently refrained from confirming his future publicly until now.

Speaking openly for the first time, Verstappen described the rumours as “interesting” but maintained that his focus was always on improving team performance and preparing for the next season.

He said, “Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama. But, for me, it’s always been quite clear, and also for next year. I’m discussing with the team already the plans, the things that we want to change for next year. So that means that I’m also staying with the team for next year.”
