Guide to the 2019 Six Red World Championship

There’s plenty of snooker in September to look forward to as the 2019/20 campaign continues with successive tournaments in Asia.

August boasted just one ranking event, with Judd Trump underlying his claim if being the number 1 in the world at present by coming out victorious in the international championship. There were also wins for Jimmy White in the World Seniors Championship and Barry Hawkins in the revamped Paul Hunter Classic.

Events in Asia will surely dominate the entire space this September as the players fight for one ranking event, one major invitational, and another world championship.

The next stop on the 2019/20 calendar is Thailand, where the Six Red World Championship draw will commence on Monday in the capital city of Bangkok. In its usual early September slot that it has held since 2013, the invitation tournament follows its now regular pattern.

A total of 32 players contest the 2019 Six Red World Championship draw, a format that is the same as regular snooker except for the apparent difference of there being fewer reds on the table from the start of a frame.

Six reds snooker has a lot of detractors, but the game is popular in Thailand, and there are usually decent crowds in to watch the action each year at the BCC Hall. One of their own managed to capture the title four years back. It was a memorable occasion for Therapist Un-Nooh as he thumped Liang Wenbo in the 2015 title decider to the delight of his grassroots fans.

Un-Nooh is one of seven former winners presently in the field – including the current world champion Kyren Wilson.

Kyren Wilson overcame Ding Junhui in last year’s showdown for glory when he lifted the trophy for the first time with an 8-4 victory over Ding Junhui.

Ding himself also previously etched his name onto the roll of honor and will be hoping to recover some lost form. Ding is among a number of other forms winners in the draw, alongside Mark Selby, Stephen Maguire, Mark Williams, and home favorite Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.

Recent world seniors champion Jimmy White is also in the hurt, ten years after he clinched the championship when it was staged as the six red world grand pix.

Other prominent players to note in the six red world championship draws are John Higgins and Stuart Bingham.

This tournament might not gain widespread coverage but the contenders in action will for sure take it very seriously as a cheque worth more than 80,000 pounds is at stake for whoever the champion turns out to be.
