Alexander Zverev admits that he played bad tennis at the Australian Open

Alexander Zverev had the opportunity to showcase his talent at the Australian Open but there he crashed out in the fourth round of the event after ending up second best against Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov. The German was the third seed in the tournament after Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev. The opportunity to win his maiden Grand Slam also widened when Djokovic was not taking part in the event after the vaccination row.

But the youngster could not deliver under pressure yet again and had to bow out of the Happy Slam with a very disappointing result. However, he has instantly decided to play in the 2022 Montpellier Open. The 23-year-old reached the finals but shockingly he lost out against a spirited Alexander Bublik.

Ahead of the Montpellier Open finals, Zverev revealed that he did not play to his potential in Melbourne. Rather he admitted that he played ‘bad’ tennis at the Australian Open.

The 23-year-old German once again repeated the goals that he has mentioned earlier of winning the Grand Slam. The youngster has won five Masters 1000 titles and Olympic gold and only want to bag the elusive maiden Grand Slam.

“I won the Masters twice, 5 masters 1000, the Olympics, my next goal is to win a Grand Slam. I’m working hard for that,” added the German.

Zverev has been very dominated in his journey to the finals of the Montpellier Open 2022. He defeated the likes of Mackenzie McDonald, Adrian Mannarino and Mikael Ymer before facing Alexander Bublik in the finals.

Zverev was in rampant form ahead of the finals and have not had dropped a single set en route to the finale. But somehow things did not click and he lost the plot completely against the Kazakh in the finals losing 6-4, 6-3. Bublik was in fantastic form as he defeated Roberto Bautista Agut and Filip Krajinovic on his way to the summit clash.

Before this match, Bublik enjoyed a 1-0 advantage over the German as he defeated him in the first round of the Rotterdam Open. It would have been his second Montpellier Open title after winning the first one back in 2017.
