World number one, Novak Djokovic, has made it to the semifinals of the Wimbledon Championship after defeating Jannik Sinner in a game of five sets. That has to be one of Djokovic’s toughest matches this season. Djokovic came from behind, after dropping two sets, to win 5-7 2-6 6-3 6-2 6-2.
20-year-old Sinner posed a real threat to the 20-time Grand Slam winner on Tuesday, but Djokovic, with his wealth of experience, was able to come back to win three sets in a row and extend his stay in Wimbledon, where he is hoping to win his first Grand Slam title of the year.
Speaking after the match, the Serbian said he talked to himself during one of the breaks, allowing him to pull himself together: “I went out and had a refresh, had a toilet break, I had a little pep talk to myself in the mirror, it’s the truth.
“Sometimes, in these circumstances when not much is happening positively for you, sometimes these things are necessary. A little break to try and regather the thoughts and reassemble.”
The Italian 10th seeds must have been happy after the end of the second set, seeing that he was almost guaranteed progress to the next round. But his dreams were cut short after Djokovic was able to draw strength from within. He will now play Cameron Norrie, who is the remaining Brit in the game, in the semifinals.
Djokovic has had a particularly interesting year, beginning with his deportation from Australia. Last month, Rafael Nadal denied him the chance to win the French Open after beating him in the quarterfinals in one of the toughest matches in tennis history. The semifinals in Wimbledon is the farthest Djokovic has gotten to this year, as far as Grand Slams are concerned.
