Former World no.1 Roger Federer has provided an update on his return to the Tennis court. The Swiss Maestro has revealed that he will take part in Laver Cup and the Basel. Federer will team up with his friend Rafael Nadal in the Laver Cup for Team Europe against the Rest of the World.
However, Federer wants to make his comeback as slow and steady. The veteran had last played in Wimbledon 2021 and had lost to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets in the quarterfinals.
Subsequently, Federer went under the knife for another knee injury and hasn’t played since then as he is currently undergoing rehab.
Federer also revealed he hasn’t yet planned more than participating in Laver Cup and Basel and thus he will make a full return to the ATP tour in the next season in 2023.
“I haven’t planned more than the Laver Cup and Basel yet,” Roger Federer told tagesanzeiger.ch.
“After Basel, the season is over anyway. It’s important for me to get fit again so that I can train fully. Once I’ve done that, I can choose how many tournaments I play and where. “The Laver Cup is a good start, I don’t have to play five matches in six days.
“I will have to be able to do that in Basel. That’s why I have to prepare for it in practice. I’m curious myself about what’s still to come. But I’m hopeful, I’ve come a long way. I’m not far away. The next three or four months will be extremely important.”
When asked if he still plans on making a return to the ATP Tour, Federer said: “Yes, definitely. “How and where I don’t know yet. But that would be the idea. Definitely.”
There is no doubt that Federer is in the twilight of his glorious career but he has decided to make another comeback despite injury woes. The fifth edition of the Laver Cup will begin on September 23 in London.
