I don’t want to discredit myself – Carlos Alcaraz’s number one status not diminished by Djokovic, Federer, Nadal absences

US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t want to take credit from himself after winning the New York major and rising to the numero uno position in the ATP rankings. Alcaraz was able to go all the way in the US Open after beating Casper Ruud in the four-set contest.

However, Novak Djokovic could not take part at the Flushing Meadows as he was not allowed to enter the US due to his unvaccinated status according to the immigration rules. Furthermore, Nadal was knocked out of the US Open after losing to Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round.

Roger Federer hasn’t been able to take part in the tour due to his injury woes. Thus, Alcaraz didn’t have to face any member of the Big 3 before winning the US Open.

“Look, I don’t want to take credit away from myself,” he told the New York Times. “But it’s true that Rafa, Djokovic, Federer, they were in a period when they were all playing. I had the luck or whatever you want to call it that Djokovic could not play.

“Everybody has their reasons, but that is the reality. He could not play much for a while, and Rafa kept playing but not all year, either. But like I said, I don’t want to take credit away from myself.

“I have been playing all season, playing incredible matches and incredible tournaments, and I’ve worked really hard so that things like this could happen.”

Carlos Alcaraz was able to come up with his best and deserves all the credit for his fine show. Alcaraz will lead Spain in their Davis Cup campaign in Valencia this week.
