Novak Djokovic has had an unfair year – Goran Ivanisevic

Novak Djokovic is having an unfair year, according to his coach Goran Ivanisevic. With US Open withdrawal looming large on Djokovic, the future is uncertain for the Serbian. As per the current Covid-19 rules and regulations, Djokovic cannot enter the US as he is not vaccinated.

Earlier in the year, Djokovic was deported from Australia as he had taken the shot but was offered a medical exemption. However, his visa was revoked by the authorities and he could not defend his title in Melbourne. Subsequently, Djokovic could not take part in Miami Open and Indian Wells, as both of these tournaments are played in America.

Meanwhile, Djokovic lost to arch-rival Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal of the French Open. However, the Serbian was able to go all the way in Wimbledon.

Goran Ivanisevic told Sport Klub: “It’s more likely that I receive a wild card for the Umag 250 and win than they allow Novak Djokovic to play the US Open.

“If you are vaccinated and infected, you can enter America, and if you are unvaccinated and test negative, then you cannot enter America.”

Meanwhile, Djokovic was able to win his fourth successive title at SW19. Ivanisevic added that it is always a pleasure to work with Djokovic, as he is always hungry for more success.

“He has had a difficult, unfair year, many bad things happened to him,” Ivanisevic said. “He deserved that Wimbledon, in the final there were two of the world’s best tennis players on grass, he and Nick Kyrgios.

“It is an honor and a pleasure [to work with Djokovic] – a man who has conquered everything and is still hungry and eager for success.”

Djokovic was recently seen training in Croatia amid US Open uncertainty. It will be interesting to note if Djokovic will be allowed to take part in the New York Major but the chances of it happening are bleak.
