Sunshine Double for Jannik Sinner after Miami Open win

Jannik Sinner has completed the ‘Sunshine Double’ after beating Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-4 in the Miami Open final.

The Italian world number two won titles at Indian Wells and Miami in the same season. He is the first man to do it since Roger Federer in 2017.

Only eight men in history have achieved the feat, and Sinner also became the first player to win both tournaments without dropping a set.

The 24-year-old had to deal with long rain delays in Sunday’s final in Miami Gardens.

Lehecka lost his serve for the first time in the tournament to fall 3-1 behind in the first set. He saved two set points at 5-3, but Sinner served out the set in 47 minutes.

Play was stopped for 80 minutes early in the second set because of rain.

When the match resumed, Sinner stayed in control. He did not face a break point in the second set and sealed victory in one hour and 33 minutes of playing time.

Sinner won 92 per cent of points on his first serve and saved all three break points he faced in the match.

The win gives him his second Miami Open title and his seventh ATP Masters 1000 crown.

He has now won 34 matches in his last 36 and has taken 34 straight sets at Masters 1000 level, a record in the modern era.

Earlier this month, Sinner beat Daniil Medvedev to win his first Indian Wells title.

His 2026 record now stands at 19 wins and two defeats.

Sinner moves closer to world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP rankings as the tour heads into the clay-court season.
