The Charlotte Hornets have suffered an early setback ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season, with point guard Coby White ruled out of the entire preseason after sustaining a left calf strain during training camp.
The franchise confirmed the injury but has yet to establish a definite timeline for the guard’s return, raising doubts over his availability for the opening game of the regular season.
Charlotte will begin its regular-season campaign against the Brooklyn Nets on October 21, although White’s participation remains uncertain.
The Hornets have indicated that further updates will be released once the medical staff has a clearer understanding of the injury and the recovery period required.
White’s absence comes at a particularly challenging time for Charlotte, which had been preparing to hand him a more prominent role in its backcourt.
The 26-year-old was expected to become the team’s starting point guard following the departure of LaMelo Ball, who was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in the offseason.
Ball’s exit created an opportunity for White to establish himself as a central figure in Charlotte’s offensive setup.
However, the calf injury has disrupted those preparations, leaving the Hornets facing uncertainty over their starting point guard position heading into the new campaign.
The team has not provided specific details about the severity of the strain or indicated whether White will be ready for the regular-season opener.
His recovery will now be closely monitored as Charlotte approaches the beginning of its competitive schedule.
White joined the Hornets last season and made a positive contribution during his limited appearances for the franchise.
Across 21 games, he averaged 15.6 points, three rebounds and three assists per contest, demonstrating his ability to contribute both as a scorer and a playmaker.
Those performances had positioned him for increased responsibility following the changes to Charlotte’s roster.
The Hornets are scheduled to begin their preseason campaign on Tuesday night when they host the Brooklyn Nets.
The contest will tip off at 7 p.m. Eastern Time and will be available on NBA TV and NBA League Pass.
With White unavailable throughout the preseason, Charlotte will have to use its remaining exhibition games to assess alternative options at point guard.
The immediate priority, however, will be ensuring that White makes a full recovery rather than rushing him back into action.
For now, his status for the October 21 meeting with Brooklyn remains unresolved, with the Hornets expected to provide further information as his rehabilitation progresses.
