Golden State Warriors Land Al Horford in Major Offseason Move

The Golden State Warriors have secured the services of veteran big man Al Horford, marking a high-profile addition to their roster. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Horford has given a verbal commitment to join the seven-time champions on a multi-year deal, with the final terms expected to be finalized following decisions related to restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.

The move signals the Warriors’ intent to bolster their frontcourt with experience and versatility as they look to reassert themselves in a competitive Western Conference. Horford, a 2024 NBA champion with the Boston Celtics, had long been linked with the Warriors and becomes their first major free-agent signing of the offseason.

Entering his 18th NBA season, the 39-year-old center averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 27.7 minutes per game last season, with shooting splits of 42.3% from the field, 36.3% from beyond the arc, and a near-perfect 89.5% from the free-throw line. Despite a dip in scoring, Horford has continued to deliver as a stretch big man, making over 108 three-pointers in each of the past three seasons.

The signing also marks the end of an era for Horford in Boston, where he spent seven seasons across two stints, playing a pivotal role in securing the franchise’s record-tying 18th championship title in 2024. In an emotional farewell shared on social media, Horford thanked the city and the Celtics organization.

“From the moment we arrived, you have welcomed my family and I with open arms,” Horford wrote. “This chapter in my career will hold a special place in my heart. Raising banner 18 with this city will be a moment I will always cherish. I am forever grateful for the fans and the organization. Thank you, Boston.

Horford’s exit is the latest in a series of departures from the championship-winning Celtics roster. Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis were recently traded, Luke Kornet joined the San Antonio Spurs, and Jayson Tatum remains sidelined indefinitely due to an Achilles injury sustained during the playoffs.

For the Warriors, Horford brings a steady veteran presence, high basketball IQ, and much-needed floor spacing. He is expected to start alongside Draymond Green, giving head coach Steve Kerr a defensively formidable and tactically versatile frontcourt. As the Warriors look to rebound from recent postseason disappointments, Horford’s arrival could prove to be a pivotal piece in their quest for title number eight.
