Heat vs. Lakers NBA Finals Preview

LeBron James will face one of his former teams in the NBA Finals. Can the Heat prevent him from winning his fourth NBA Championship? The Miami Heat went 3-5 in the NBA seeding games but their injuries had a lot to do with that record.

When healthy, the Heat can compete against anyone. Led by Jimmy Butler, possibly the toughest player in the league mentally and physically, they have a lot of depth, talent and confidence.

In addition to his valuable leadership, Bam Adebayo came into his own this year, making a big difference. A potential issue is who will carry their offense if the Lakers slow down Jimmy Butler but Adebayo, Tyler Herro, Kendrick Nunn and Duncan Robinson all proved that they can step up and take some of the pressure off Butler.

Miami also needs Goran Dragic (plus-1.4 Offensive Box Plus/Minus) to keep playing at a high level whenever he’s on the court. The veteran point guard has playmaking skills that can be valuable if he starts or in the second unit.

As for the Lakers, it was clear that they were NBA Championship contenders as long as LeBron James and Anthony Davis were healthy. Leading the Lakers their first title since 2010 would improve LeBron’s legacy and validate AD’s decision to force his way out of the Pelicans.

The supporting cast for the Lakers is a bit questionable though. Having Rajon Rondo back improved their depth but one of their players to watch is Kyle Kuzma (minus-1.6 Offensive Box Plus/Minus). Kuzma hasn’t been consistent on offense and he has to improve on defense (minus-1.0 Defensive Box Plus/Minus).

The Heat can challenge the Lakers. Jimmy Butler, Jae Crowder and Andre Iguodala will make LeBron work for it and Bam Adebayo can make AD work for his. Miami moves the ball well, they can shoot the lights out, they’re well-coach, Erik Spoelstra knows LeBron and will throw different defensive schemes at them.
