Charlotte Hornets guard-forward Kon Knueppel endured a frustrating start to his second NBA season after being forced to leave Wednesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets due to soreness in his left leg.
The 2025 NBA Draft’s fourth overall pick was making his highly anticipated season debut after missing Charlotte’s opening eight games with a left hamstring strain. However, his return lasted just five minutes before another injury concern brought his night to an early end.
Knueppel experienced discomfort in the same leg during the first quarter and was immediately withdrawn from the contest. The Hornets subsequently ruled him out for the remainder of the game, cutting short what was supposed to be his comeback appearance.
Before leaving the court, the 21-year-old contributed three points, converting all three of his free throws while missing his only field-goal attempt.
The setback comes at an unfortunate time for Knueppel, who entered his sophomore campaign following an outstanding rookie season that established him as one of the NBA’s most promising young players.
After being selected fourth overall by Charlotte in the 2025 NBA Draft, the former Duke standout made an immediate impact with his scoring ability and impressive shooting from beyond the arc.
Knueppel averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists during his debut campaign while connecting on an excellent 42.5% of his three-point attempts.
His performances earned him second place in the Kia Rookie of the Year voting, finishing behind former Duke teammate Cooper Flagg.
The Hornets youngster also made NBA history by setting the record for the most three-pointers made by a rookie.
He finished the season with 273 successful three-point shots, a remarkable achievement that also saw him lead the entire league in total three-pointers made.
Those accomplishments raised expectations for his second season, with Charlotte hoping he would build on his impressive debut campaign and continue developing into a key contributor.
However, the hamstring problem that delayed his season debut has now created fresh uncertainty surrounding his availability.
Although the Hornets confirmed that Knueppel would not return against Brooklyn, the extent of his latest discomfort and whether it will result in additional missed games remains unclear.
Charlotte will now be hoping the soreness does not develop into a more serious issue as the team awaits further clarity on his condition.
For Knueppel, Wednesday’s brief appearance represented a disappointing return after weeks on the sidelines, leaving his immediate playing future uncertain.
