Deontay Wilder vs. Jai Opetaia has been confirmed as the co-main event for Tyson Fury’s heavyweight showdown with Anthony Joshua, scheduled for this December.
Wilder, 41, remains one of the sport’s most recognizable punchers. The former WBC heavyweight champion carries a record of 45 wins, four losses and one draw, with 43 knockouts, and his right hand can alter any fight in an instant.
After losses to Fury and Joseph Parker, he has rebuilt his base with victories over Tyrrell Herndon and Derek Chisora, but this is a far more demanding test of whether he can still compete at the highest level.
Opetaia arrives unbeaten at 31-0, with 24 wins by knockout. The Australian is a former IBF cruiserweight champion and currently holds Ring and Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight titles, giving him both credibility and momentum as he steps up to heavyweight for the first time.
At 31, he is younger, fresher and arguably closer to his prime than Wilder, yet he has never faced a puncher with Wilder’s one-shot reputation.
Opetaia is quick, composed and technically sharp, with the kind of movement and accuracy that could make life uncomfortable for a fighter who has often relied on timing and raw force. Wilder, though, only needs one clean connection. If Opetaia underestimates that threat, the contest could end abruptly.
For Wilder, a victory over an undefeated, highly regarded champion would restore belief in his claim to remain a major heavyweight force.
A defeat would likely confirm that his best years are behind him, particularly against an opponent moving up in weight.
Opetaia has even more to gain. Beating Wilder would give him the most famous scalp of his career and establish him as a genuine heavyweight contender rather than merely a cruiserweight great. It would also strengthen the case for future fights against the division’s leading names.
There are questions about the competitive balance. Wilder has not consistently performed at elite level in recent years, while Opetaia has looked dominant at cruiserweight. Still, heavyweight boxing is uniquely unpredictable, and Wilder’s power ensures this is no ceremonial appearance.
