When you think about domination in the NBA, we often think about Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. But in recent years that status has been achieved by the Golden State Warriors. In 2015, things completely changed for the Warriors as they rewrote history in the NBA. They won three titles in four years and broke several records on the way.
However, they could not achieve the historic three-peat due to injuries to Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. Recently Isaiah Thomas revealed about his feelings when Durant got injured. The Warriors were sensational in winning back to back finals against the Cavaliers. However when they took on new opponents Toronto Raptors. The Raptors led by their talisman Kawhi Leonard gave a strong fight to the strong Warriors unit. However injuries to Durant and Thompson shorthanded the Dubs.
While on ‘The Etcs’ Podcast, Thomas revealed how emotional he and the players got when Durant picked up that injury.
NBA Hall of Famer Isaiah Thomas revealed how he felt his emotions rolling when he watched Kevin Durant pick up that injury in the finals. Thomas always knew that KD was out for the finals after seeing what had happened to him in the finals. Therefore Thomas had to break through security to speak to Durant.
He narrated saying: “I was hurt for Kevin that night.” Thomas continued, “You limped off the court and I think only athletes kind of feel this way sometimes where you know what the other person is going through. I actually got like emotional and I busted through the back, I like to bust through security.”
“I knew I wasn’t supposed to be in the moment But I was like a fan, but I was also somebody who wanted to personally let you know like ‘Man, I know what you going through, I appreciate you, I love you and come back from this,” Thomas added.
Durant was dealing with a calf injury which kept him out of the finals. However, luck was not on his side as he picked up an ACL injury. He picked up a massive injury and missed an entire season after that.
So the Warriors lost the series and could not complete the three-peat. They would have been the first team to pull the three-peat after Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal’s Los Angeles Lakers. However, it wasn’t to be as the Raptors won the Championship with Kawhi Leonard declared as the Finals MVP.
