The Atlanta Hawks secured a commanding 119-98 win over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night, but the victory was tempered by an injury scare involving forward Jalen Johnson.
Johnson exited the contest in the first quarter after suffering a left hip flexor injury. Following an evaluation by the team’s medical staff, he was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
“There was enough there not to send him back in the game,” head coach Quin Snyder said afterward, signaling caution regarding the All-Star forward’s condition.
Johnson, who earned his first All-Star Game selection this season, had a brief appearance before departing. In just over five minutes of action, he recorded five points, three rebounds and two steals. Entering the matchup, he had been enjoying a standout campaign, averaging 23.4 points, 10.8 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game — numbers that have cemented his importance to Atlanta’s success.
The Hawks will monitor Johnson’s recovery closely, with plans to re-evaluate him before Thursday’s rematch against Washington. The two teams are set to complete back-to-back games in Atlanta, and it remains unclear whether Johnson will miss additional time.
In his absence, newly acquired forward Jonathan Kuminga seized the opportunity. Making his Hawks debut after arriving from Golden State at the trade deadline, Kuminga delivered an immediate impact, pouring in a season-high 27 points. His scoring burst helped Atlanta maintain control and extend its lead throughout the game.
Despite losing one of their key players early, the Hawks showed depth and resilience. They tightened up defensively and capitalized on Washington’s struggles, pulling away comfortably in the second half.
Still, Johnson’s health looms large over Atlanta’s immediate future. As one of the team’s primary playmakers and rebounders, his availability could shape the outcome of the upcoming stretch, starting with Thursday’s clash against the Wizards.
For now, the Hawks can celebrate a convincing win while anxiously awaiting further updates on their rising star.
