Lakers Torch Thunder with Record Long-Range Barrage to Close in on Playoff Berth

The Los Angeles Lakers delivered a stunning statement victory on Sunday night, dismantling Western Conference leaders Oklahoma City Thunder 126-99 behind a record-breaking first-half shooting spree and a dominant all-around performance led by Luka Doncic.

Doncic poured in 30 points, including five three-pointers, as the Lakers rained down a franchise-record 15 threes in the first half alone to take a commanding 78-56 lead into halftime. The early barrage left the Thunder reeling, and Los Angeles never let up, maintaining control throughout to secure a crucial win in the Western Conference playoff race.

“It’s a really good win for us and we can build off it,” LeBron James said after the game. “They’re the number one team in the West, so you can’t let up no matter what the score is. We’re just trying to build our habits right now, going into the final stretch of the year.”

James added 19 points, while Austin Reaves chipped in with 20, hitting four of the Lakers’ 22 total three-pointers on the night. The victory moved the Lakers to 48-30, solidifying their grip on third place as six teams battle for four remaining playoff spots behind already-qualified Oklahoma City and Houston.

Despite the loss, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 26 points. However, it was a rare off night for Oklahoma City, who shot just 43% from the field and struggled from beyond the arc, hitting only 12-of-37 attempts. The Thunder failed to break the 100-point barrier for the first time since November 15.

The Lakers’ relentless start — defined by rapid ball movement and unselfish play — stunned the home crowd and left little room for a Thunder comeback. Doncic set the tone early with back-to-back deep shots, while the Lakers’ bench provided critical support to keep the pressure on.

Reaves emphasized the significance of the win in the context of the tightly packed Western Conference standings. “It’s huge,” he said. “The way the standings are, you can go from third to eighth in the snap of a finger. So for us to come in and play such a good team the way we did tonight is big. Hopefully we can build on that momentum.”

The two teams will face off again on Tuesday in Oklahoma City, in what could be a pivotal matchup with playoff implications.
