NBA Fines Desmond Bane $35,000 for Unsportsmanlike Ball-Throwing Incident Against Knicks

Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane has been fined $35,000 by the NBA for what the league deemed an unsportsmanlike act after he forcefully threw the game ball at New York Knicks forward O.G. Anunoby. The incident occurred during Orlando’s 106-100 loss at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, adding another disciplinary mark to Bane’s recent record.

With 6:13 left in the fourth quarter, Anunoby drove hard to the basket and collided with two Orlando defenders, sending all three players tumbling beyond the end line. As the ball rolled free, Bane picked it up and launched it into the left side of Anunoby’s body while the forward was still down on the floor. Officials immediately assessed a technical foul on Bane, prompting further review from the league office.

This is not the first time Bane’s conduct has drawn league scrutiny. Just last month, he was ejected from a game after a flagrant foul and a technical foul in an altercation where he knocked Atlanta Hawks center Onyeka Okongwu to the court and then fired the ball off Okongwu’s head. The latest fine further elevates concerns about Bane’s on-court discipline as the season progresses.

Despite the controversies, Bane has been a productive contributor for the Magic. He is averaging 18.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game this season, serving as a key offensive option for Orlando. The Magic currently stand at 14-10, placing them fifth in the Eastern Conference as they continue to push for stability and momentum.

Sunday’s incident, however, casts a shadow over Bane’s strong individual performances. The NBA’s ruling underscores the league’s current emphasis on curbing unsportsmanlike behavior and maintaining player safety, especially in emotionally charged late-game situations. As Orlando navigates a competitive Eastern Conference race, Bane’s ability to maintain composure will be crucial to the team’s success.

With growing expectations surrounding the Magic’s promising roster, Bane’s fine serves as both a reprimand and a reminder—his impact must come through scoring, leadership and consistency, not through moments that risk suspension or further penalties.
