In the absence of Klay Thompson, Golden State Warriors’ forward Draymond Green has stepped up to support Stephen Curry this season. He is undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the NBA and has been living up to that billing this season.
The 31-year-old’s exceptional defensive play has helped him be a vital cog for head coach Steve Kerr inspiring the Warriors dominations in the NBA. Currently, he is a very important player for the Dubs as he has been a great support to Curry in Thompson’s absence due to injury. He has been averaging 6.1 points, 8.4 assists, and 6.6 rebounds per game.
However be it on the court or off it, Draymond Green likes to be on the headlines for as long as possible. He has been the centre of several controversies in the past as well. In an appearance at the Dubs Talk podcast, Green came up with a bizarre claim calling himself the best defender in NBA history.
While Green is certainly very good but the league has seen several top defenders and therefore the GSW forward’s claims is way too bizarre. Currently, the NBA are also buzzing with Green’s claims and it was even featured on the Inside NBA.
Sacramento Kings legend All-Star, Chris Webber did certainly take offence with Draymond Green’s comment. Webber said, “There is no way to say ever that’s just crazy and whoever agrees with him or ever you don’t know basketball and Draymond should say what he says.”
Webber holds great respect for the contributions that Green has made in the sport but then he mentioned some top defenders to feature in the league.
“Two things can be right. If I’m Draymond, I totally agree. Draymond from the glove, he got heart, he’s been doing it since college, he had a triple-double without scoring. He’s the man defensively, he’ll shut everybody down, but I just like reminding people of some names.
“Bill Russell like I just feel like I had a big glove with some baby powder and just go smack everybody in the world and you ain’t say, Bill Russell. Kobe, KG (Kevin Garnett). KG, seven-foot, checking one, twos, and threes. Draymond is the man. Let’s all have a great you know conversation. GP (Gary Payton), Dennis Rodman.”
Webber added, “I definitely think you know he’s great but I just think you can’t say ever all.”
Draymond Green can very well claim to be the most versatile and modern defender as he can do it all starting from steals, blocks to high-intensity rebounding.
