Darren Collison was an option at backup point guard for the Clippers but he decided to stay retired. This opened a spot for Jackson.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Jackson agreed to a contract buyout with the Pistons and plans to sign with the Clippers upon clearing waivers.
“Jackson gives the Clippers second unit a starting-level playmaker and scorer. Lakers had hoped to sign Jackson too, sources said. Clippers emerge from the buyout market with the most talented player available that had been available to contenders,”Wojnarowski explained.
Jackson is averaging 14.9 points, 5.1 assists and 2.9 rebounds in 27.2 minutes over 14 games with the Pistons this season. He shoots 38.4 percent from the field, 37.4 percent from beyond the arc and 78.8 percent from the free-throw line.
Jackson’s 3-point shot has improved. He is making 37.8 percent of his attempts in 14 games this season and he shot 36.9 percent from 3-point range in 82 games last year.
If Jackson’s shooting efficiency from distance continues then this could end up a very valuable depth signing. The veteran point guard can also provide an additional spark off the bench in the playoffs. Also, signing him kept him away from the Lakers.
The Clippers will likely have IvicaZubac, Marcus Morris, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Patrick Beverley in the starting lineup and use Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, Landry Shamet, JaMychal Green and Reggie Jackson off the bench. That’s an extremely deep roster and if healthy they will be the team to beat in the playoffs.
