Sixers Force Game 6 as Embiid Shines and Celtics Collapse Late

Philadelphia 76ers kept their playoff hopes alive with a dramatic Game 5 comeback win over the Boston Celtics, turning a seemingly controlled series into a tense battle heading into Game 6 in Philadelphia.

With elimination looming, the Sixers leaned heavily on Joel Embiid, who delivered a dominant performance despite a brief injury scare. The star center finished with 33 points, anchoring a fourth-quarter surge that saw Boston collapse offensively. Embiid momentarily left the game in the third quarter after landing awkwardly, sparking concern given his recent return from appendix surgery. However, he returned quickly and took control, attacking the paint and drawing fouls with authority.

His presence proved decisive, exposing Boston’s interior defense and shifting momentum entirely. “He put a lot of pressure on us,” admitted Jayson Tatum after the game.

Philadelphia’s resurgence was most evident in the final quarter, where Boston managed just 11 points. The Celtics, who once led by 13 in the second half, unraveled under pressure. They shot a dismal 3-for-22 in the fourth and endured a prolonged scoring drought, missing 16 consecutive shots to close the game.

Tatum and Jaylen Brown struggled to deliver when it mattered most, combining for only four points in the quarter. “When you’re not scoring the way you want to, it puts a lot of pressure on your defense,” Tatum said, reflecting on the team’s late-game struggles.

While Embiid dominated headlines, Tyrese Maxey once again proved indispensable for the Sixers. The guard delivered a near all-around masterclass with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, showcasing relentless energy on both ends. His ability to attack the rim and create plays kept Boston’s defense constantly off balance.

For the Celtics, concerns are mounting beyond just the loss. Derrick White has yet to find rhythm in the series, shooting poorly and struggling to make his usual impact. Coach Joe Mazzulla may now face tough decisions regarding rotations if the slump continues.

The result has shifted the tone of the series dramatically. What once looked like a straightforward path for Boston after taking a 3-1 lead is now uncertain. With Game 6 approaching, the stakes have intensified.

If Philadelphia can replicate this performance and keep Embiid healthy, a decisive Game 7 could be on the horizon. But if Boston regroups, it still holds the edge to close out the series.

For now, momentum has swung and the series is very much alive.
