Stephen Curry Signs $62.6 Million Extension with Golden State Warriors, Solidifying Future Through 2026-27

Stephen Curry, the face of the Golden State Warriors and one of the most iconic players in NBA history, has agreed to a one-year, $62.6 million contract extension with the franchise. The deal, confirmed by Curry’s agent Jeff Austin, will keep the superstar point guard with the Warriors through the 2026-27 season, when Curry will be 39 years old.

Curry, who has been the highest-paid player in the NBA since the 2017-18 season, continues to solidify his financial legacy with this extension. This latest deal will see Curry become the first player in NBA history to earn over $60 million in a single season, with the milestone expected during the 2026-27 campaign.

Over the next three seasons, Curry is set to earn $178 million guaranteed, bringing his career earnings to an astounding $532.7 million by the time his contract expires. This places him in an elite group, with LeBron James projected to be the first NBA player to surpass $500 million in career earnings this season, followed closely by Kevin Durant and Paul George.

This extension reflects Curry’s enduring value to the Warriors, both on and off the court. At 36 years old, Curry is still performing at an elite level, as demonstrated by his recent performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In his first Olympic appearance, Curry was instrumental in leading Team USA to a gold medal, scoring 60 points and shooting an impressive 17 for 26 from beyond the arc in the final two games against Serbia and France.

His Olympic success capped off another strong season with the Warriors, where he averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.1 assists over 74 games, earning his 10th All-NBA selection.

Curry’s new deal aligns his contract with that of longtime teammate Draymond Green, who has a $27.7 million player option for the 2026-27 season. This synchronization of contracts could be strategic, allowing the Warriors to evaluate their roster and potentially rebuild or retool as their core players approach the twilight of their careers.

Notably, the Warriors currently have no significant contracts beyond the 2026-27 season, aside from Buddy Hield’s partially guaranteed $10.1 million player option for 2027-28. However, head coach Steve Kerr’s contract only runs through the 2025-26 season, raising questions about the future leadership of the team.

Despite Curry’s continued excellence, the Warriors are in a transitional phase. This offseason, they lost Klay Thompson, who had been Curry’s backcourt partner since 2011, and Chris Paul. However, the team might have improved its overall roster by bringing in De’Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson, and Buddy Hield.

The Warriors’ front office aggressively pursued a star player to complement Curry but fell short in potential trades for Paul George and Lauri Markkanen. As the team looks to maintain its competitive edge, the development and contract extensions of young players like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody will be crucial. Both players, selected as lottery picks in the 2021 NBA Draft, are eligible for extensions on their rookie contracts until October 21, just before the 2024-25 season begins.

Curry’s decision to extend his contract reflects his commitment to the Warriors and his belief in the team’s direction. As he continues to chase a fifth NBA title, the Warriors’ ability to surround him with the right mix of talent will be pivotal. With Curry still performing at a high level and showing no signs of slowing down, Golden State remains a team to watch, but whether they can return to the pinnacle of the NBA remains to be seen. The next few seasons will determine if Curry can add another chapter to his legendary career with the Warriors.
