Victor Wembanyama shares the reason behind his Spurs jersey number, feels he was reborn on the draft night

There is a lot of interest around the No.1 draft pick Victor Wembanyama who got to choose his number and just like others it has a lot of personal meaning. Wemby used to wear the No.1 jersey for the Metropolitans 92 but hasn’t really explained any reason behind it.

The French big man finally shared his thoughts on wearing the Spurs jersey and the real meaning behind his preferred jersey number. There is a lot of interest around the No.1 draft pick as people want to see his heroics on the court and some are also attracted by his humility and matured thinking at such a young age.

When asked what it means to wear the Spurs jersey, Wemby highlighted how he felt like he should have always worn it. ,” It’s comfortable,” Wemby said. “It feels like I always should’ve worn this one.”

Speaking about his jersey numbers, the youngster said, “It’s a mentality. … There’s no other option but to be No. 1. I can’t accept to be behind someone in some way and not being the best,” he added.

It is rare to see young players remain so grounded even after receiving such fanfare. His answers had a sense of confidence but he was always humble with his way of answering them.

Wemby will be in action on Friday against the Charlotte Hornets in the Summer League.

There was hardly any doubt that Wembanyama would be the first pick in the draft. But the youngster was still very nervous and excited ahead of the D-day.

When asked about the feeling in the build to the day of the draft, the Frenchman compared it to giving birth to a baby. He explained how the feeling is similar as he believes that he got a new life when he was drafted on the night.

“When you expect a baby nine months before when it comes in, you still cry,” Wembanyama said. “It’s still a big achievement in my life. It’s a dream come true. There’s no award for what I got. I deserved it, I expected it but still, it’s like I was born on draft night. It’s a new life,” the no.1 draft pick shared.

Many people believe that the youngster can take San Antonio Spurs back to where they belong in the NBA. The city now has a new rookie who has everything in him to succeed at this level.

Big things are expected from Wembanyama and it will be exciting to see how he adjusts his life as a NBA player. His growth and development as a player will also be crucial as he aims to stand true to his potential.
