Wembanyama Powers Spurs Past Thunder in Double-Overtime Western Conference Finals Thriller

San Antonio Spurs drew first blood in the Western Conference finals with a dramatic 122-115 double-overtime victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday, thanks to a dominant performance from Victor Wembanyama.

The young French star produced one of the standout playoff displays of his career, finishing with 41 points, 24 rebounds and three blocks as San Antonio stunned the top-seeded Thunder on their home court. The defeat marked Oklahoma City’s first loss of the postseason after sweeping both the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers in earlier rounds.

Wembanyama delivered repeatedly in the clutch moments. With just 22 seconds remaining in the second overtime, he threw down a powerful alley-oop dunk from a pass by Stephon Castle to stretch the Spurs’ lead to six points and finally create separation in a game that had remained tight throughout.

Moments later, Wembanyama blocked a shot from Jalen Williams to effectively seal the victory.

The Spurs star shot 14-of-25 from the field and was nearly flawless from the free-throw line, converting 12 of 13 attempts. One of the game’s defining moments came late in the first overtime when he buried a 27-foot transition three-pointer with 26.3 seconds left to tie the score.

Oklahoma City still had a final opportunity to win after a timeout. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander drove into the lane and found Williams open for a potential game-winning three, but the shot missed. Rookie Dylan Harper secured the rebound with less than a second remaining, and San Antonio survived to force a second extra period.

The closing stages of regulation were equally dramatic. Gilgeous-Alexander tied the game with 3.1 seconds remaining after driving past the Spurs defense for a layup. Earlier, Wembanyama had hit a turnaround jumper over Williams to put San Antonio ahead with 11.5 seconds left.

The Spurs again turned to Wembanyama for the final possession of regulation, but Chet Holmgren rose to block his shot and send the contest into overtime.

Harper played a major supporting role for San Antonio, recording 24 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and six assists. Castle added 17 points and 11 assists, though he also committed 11 turnovers.

For the Thunder, Alex Caruso led the scoring with 31 points, while Williams impressed with 26 points in his first game since returning from a hamstring injury suffered in April. Gilgeous-Alexander added 24 points and 12 assists but struggled with efficiency, shooting 7-of-23 from the field.

Game 2 of the series will take place on Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
