Wembanyama Urges Spurs to Stay Grounded Ahead of NBA Finals Showdown with Knicks

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has called on his teammates to remain focused and grounded as the franchise prepares for its first NBA Finals appearance in more than a decade.

Fresh off a dramatic Game 7 victory over defending champions Oklahoma City Thunder, the Spurs have secured a place in the championship series against the New York Knicks. However, Wembanyama believes the team must quickly move past the emotions of that achievement and concentrate on the task ahead.

“The emotion is something I haven’t felt in a while,” the 22-year-old said on Tuesday. “Coming back down from the emotion is a challenge and we’re not done yet.”

The French center, who stands 7-foot-4, has enjoyed a remarkable rise since being selected first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Now in just his third NBA season, Wembanyama has guided San Antonio to the Finals in his first playoff campaign, further strengthening his reputation as one of basketball’s brightest stars.

Despite the global attention surrounding the championship matchup, Wembanyama insisted that external hype is not driving his motivation.

“Doesn’t motivate me,” he said when asked about worldwide interest in the series. “At the end of the day, only 20,000 people fit into the arena. Doesn’t really make a difference.”

Instead, the young star draws inspiration from the franchise’s rich history. The five championship banners hanging inside the Spurs’ arena serve as a constant reminder of the standards established by past legends, including Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard.

Wembanyama also credited former coach Gregg Popovich and the organization’s culture for helping guide the current squad.

“We’re really being put in the best settings to start something new,” he said. “It’s like they are carrying us, they are guiding us in the right direction.”

While the Spurs enter the Finals with momentum, Wembanyama expressed respect for a Knicks team chasing its first NBA title since 1973. He described New York as a group built through years of hard work and perseverance, warning that they will be “super hungry” for success.

The Finals also represent the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Wembanyama, who said his connection to basketball dates back to his earliest childhood memories. Yet despite his rapid ascent, he believes success is built through countless small details rather than any single factor.

“Details are the difference makers,” he said, emphasizing that preparation, discipline and consistency have all played a role in his journey.

Now, with the NBA title within reach, Wembanyama and the Spurs stand on the verge of writing a new chapter in the franchise’s storied history.
