Match Preview: Itauma vs. Hrgovic

Moses Itauma will face Filip Hrgovic at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday with the vacant IBF heavyweight title on the line, giving the unbeaten British prospect the biggest test of his career.

Itauma has moved quickly since turning professional, while Hrgovic has spent years working his way towards another opportunity at world level.

The 21-year-old enters the fight with a 14-0 record and 12 knockouts. His last two performances have only increased expectations around him, with Itauma stopping Dillian Whyte in the first round last August before knocking out Jermaine Franklin in the fifth round in March.

Against Franklin, he showed that his game is about more than power, using his footwork and combinations to create openings before finishing the fight.

Hrgovic brings considerably more experience into the contest. The 34-year-old Croatian has a 20-1 record with 15 knockouts and won an Olympic bronze medal at Rio 2016.

His only professional defeat came against Daniel Dubois in 2024, when a cut forced the fight to be stopped in the eighth round.

The Croatian has remained a highly regarded heavyweight since that setback and has the physical attributes to make life difficult for Itauma.

He is comfortable working behind his jab and has enough size and strength to prevent the younger fighter from simply walking him down.

His experience in high-level fights could also become increasingly important if the contest moves into the later rounds.

Itauma may have the advantage in hand speed, but he will need to use those qualities carefully.

Hrgovic’s size and experience could make it difficult to maintain a high pace throughout the fight, particularly if he can turn the contest into a physical battle and force Itauma to work at close range.

The vacant IBF title makes the fight all the more important.

Itauma can become the youngest heavyweight world champion since Mike Tyson if he wins, while Hrgovic has the chance to finally secure a world championship after years around the top of the division.

The winner would also move into a much stronger position for major heavyweight fights.
