Rising heavyweight fighter, Moses Itauma, has been ordered into talks with Frank Sanchez for the vacant IBF heavyweight title, setting up a possible world-title fight if the two camps can agree terms.
The IBF issued the instruction following Oleksandr Usyk relinquishing the titles in his possession, including the IBF belt.
This has opened the door for the governing body’s top-ranked contenders to compete for the vacancy.
The move gives Itauma one of the biggest opportunities of his fast-rising career.
The 21-year-old Briton is unbeaten and was already on course for a major test, with a scheduled bout against Filip Hrgovic at London’s O2 Arena on 29 August.
That fight was widely viewed as a stern examination, but the new IBF order has complicated the picture.
It may force a decision over whether Itauma stays with the Hrgovic date or pivots toward Sanchez.
Sanchez is the IBF’s number one-ranked heavyweight contender, while Itauma sits behind him in the sanctioning body’s standings.
Under the federation’s rules, that ranking order has put the Cuban in position to challenge for the vacant title, with Itauma identified as the opponent the IBF wants across from him.
Both parties have until 29 July to reach an agreement, making the next few weeks quite important in shaping the future of the heavyweight division.
There is also a history between these two sides, as Itauma had previously been ordered to face Sanchez in an IBF final eliminator, but that bout did not go ahead.
This time, however, the stakes are higher because the winner would move into position to claim a full world title rather than simply earning a future chance.
As someone who has impressed in his previous fixtures, this update feels like a natural step-up for the Nigerian-Slovakian.
He is already being billed as one of boxing’s most promising young heavyweights, and a title shot this early would speed up his climb.
Sanchez, meanwhile, has his own motivation, as the IBF’s ruling offers him a direct route to the championship after years of waiting in the contender line.
The current pace of events is in line with Usyk’s wishes when he vacated the titles, as he wished for the division to progress without him being a hindrance.
In the coming weeks, we can expect an update on a proposed fight between the two, including details such as venue, date, and other important information.
