Wardley in talks to fight Parker in October

Fabio Wardley is close to agreeing a fight with Joseph Parker, with the bout reportedly set for October 25, at London’s O2 Arena. Both fighters hold interim heavyweight titles; Wardley is the WBA interim champion, and Parker holds the WBO interim belt.

This fight is seen as a key step for both heavyweights to secure their place as the top contender for the undisputed heavyweight title, currently held by Oleksandr Usyk. Usyk, who has been mandated to fight Parker, has delayed the negotiations due to injury concerns and family time.

Wardley, who remains undefeated with 19 wins and 1 knockout, recently achieved a 10th-round knockout against Justis Huni to become the interim WBO champion, despite trailing significantly on the scorecards.

Wardley turned professional without a traditional amateur background, initially competing in white-collar boxing before moving up in the professional ranks.

He has notable wins over fighters like Nick Webb, Nathan Gorman, David Adeleye, Frazer Clarke, and Huni, and holds a considerable following in the UK.

Joseph Parker, from New Zealand, carries a record of 36 wins, 3 losses, and 24 KOs. A former WBO heavyweight world champion from 2016 to 2018, Parker has rebuilt his status since a setback against Joe Joyce in 2022, currently on a six-fight winning streak. His recent wins include knockouts over Martin Bakole, Zhilei Zhang, and Deontay Wilder.

Parker is the WBO interim champion and the mandatory challenger for Usyk’s undisputed belt, but has opted to stay active by fighting Wardley rather than waiting for Usyk’s defence that may not materialize soon.

This fight is important as it could crown the next definitive number one contender for the undisputed heavyweight championship.

The winner is expected to be in line for a 2026 showdown against Usyk, who could become a three-time undisputed heavyweight champion if successful.

Fans can expect the October bout to be a high-stakes meeting, with Parker risking his mandatory status and Wardley aiming to solidify his position as a top heavyweight contender beyond being just a domestic prospect.
