10-Man Manchester City Beat United as Haaland Settles Controversial Derby

Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal as 10-man Manchester City claimed a dramatic victory over Manchester United in a Manchester derby dominated by controversial refereeing decisions.

City were forced to play with 10 men for more than 70 minutes after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for kicking out at United captain Bruno Fernandes. Despite United enjoying long spells of pressure after the dismissal, Haaland’s 60th-minute finish proved enough to settle the contest.

The result maintained City’s perfect start to the Premier League season under new manager Enzo Maresca and moved them level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table. United, meanwhile, dropped points for the third time in four league matches and remained 13th.

Foden’s dismissal came after an incident involving Fernandes while the City midfielder was on the ground. Fernandes appeared to kick Foden in the back before Foden responded by catching the United captain in the chest with his studs.

Foden was sent off, becoming only the second City player to receive a red card in a Premier League Manchester derby after Bernardo Corradi in December 2006. Fernandes escaped without a booking.

United took control following the red card and struck the post either side of half-time, but City remained organised defensively and waited for an opportunity on the counter-attack.

That chance arrived on the hour mark. Josko Gvardiol delivered a low cross that took a deflection before reaching Haaland at the back post, where the striker tapped the ball into the net.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, only for a lengthy VAR review to overturn the decision. Haaland was judged to have been narrowly kept onside by Patrick Dorgu’s toe.

However, the involvement of Enzo Fernandez added further controversy. Fernandez was clearly in an offside position and attempted to connect with the cross using a diving header before the ball reached Haaland.

United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who was moving across his goal, briefly reacted to Fernandez’s attempt. Officials nevertheless decided the offside player had not interfered sufficiently with play for the goal to be disallowed.

United were unable to find an equaliser, allowing City to leave their rivals with three points despite spending most of the match a player short.
