Amorim speaks on Rafael Leao’s future

Milan coach Ruben Amorim has expressed eagerness to bring the Rossoneri to a different level and also said Rafael Leao remains on the books of the club unless something happens before the transfer window shuts.

Amorim was sacked after some disappointing results at Old Trafford. He is now back in management with the Milan club.

The former Sporting Lisbon manager, who admitted to making some mistakes with United, stated this during a press conference in Perth, Australia, where Milan arrived on Monday to continue their preseason arrangements. They will be playing Inter and Serie B side Palermo as part of the warm-up games.

Speaking further, he said Milan management gave him the job because they felt he was the right man for the role.

Amorim further stated that a reflection on his time at Man United doesn’t matter anymore, adding that there’s a history, and then something happens.

“The context changes, and you focus on the next challenge. I learned a lot. It would be hard to point to one thing, but the important thing that I clearly know is that I made a lot of mistakes. When you do this kind of reflection, and you understand that it was not just their fault, but also my fault, I think you can be a better coach and a better man.”

Speaking on the qualities Luca Modric, who just signed a new deal, brings to the team, the tactician said the Croatia international is a player who can still play at high levels, with such a good performance at the recently concluded 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He said such experience is needed as Milan are also signing a lot of young players, who need experienced players to succeed.

On the future of  Leao, who has received approaches from Turkish clubs, particularly Fenerbahce, Amorim said things are not overcomplicated, adding that the team is the most important thing. 

He also revealed that he will speak with the Portuguese winger and all the players who are returning from the World Cup, so as to know his squad for next season.
