Chelsea defeats Western Sydney Wanderers in goals blitz pre-season friendly

Chelsea began the Xabi Alonso era with an entertaining 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers in a pre-season friendly at Sydney’s Accor Stadium.

The Blues survived a dramatic contest in which the lead changed hands five times, eventually relying on a late surge to secure Alonso’s first win as head coach.

The Premier League side started brightly with debutant Dastan Satpayev opening the scoring, but defensive lapses allowed the Australian club to fight back repeatedly.

Goals from Anthony Pantzopoulos, Aydan Hammond, and Dylan Scicluna punished Chelsea’s defensive mistakes as the hosts threatened to pull off an upset.

With Chelsea trailing in the second half, Alonso turned to his senior players from the bench, and Brazilian striker João Pedro transformed the match.

The forward scored a late hat-trick to complete a remarkable comeback, while Jamie Gittens also found the net after coming on as a substitute to help seal the high-scoring victory.

Speaking after the match, Alonso praised João Pedro’s determination and hunger for goals, expressing confidence that the striker can play a key role during the upcoming campaign.

The Chelsea manager highlighted the Brazilian’s relentless desire to improve, despite already delivering a match-winning performance.

Although Chelsea impressed in attack, their defensive display exposed areas requiring immediate attention.

The Blues struggled to cope with Western Sydney’s attacking pressure throughout the contest. At the same time, another defensive error allowed Awan Lual to score after capitalizing on a misplaced pass late in the game.

Despite the defensive concerns, Alonso will take encouragement from beginning his reign with a victory as Chelsea continues preparations for the new season.

The Blues now shift their focus to another high-profile pre-season fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.

They are also expected to get some transfers over the line before the start of the new season, with Danny Welbeck, Jordan Henderson, and a couple of other players linked to Chelsea.
