Ángel Di María and Messi enjoying last international career matches

Two of Argentina’s biggest stars in their current squad have hinted that their retirement from the national team is closer than expected. While Angel Di Maria had initially stated that the Copa America would be his last tournament for Argentina even before it started, Lionel Messi has seemingly teased a similar announcement.

Both players were involved as La Albiceleste secured their place at the Copa América final after beating Canada 2-0 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

While La Albiceleste got past Ecuador on penalties in the quarter-finals, and the Canadians needed the same against Venezuela, the shootout was not needed in the semi-finals, as Argentina dominated the Canadians from start to finish.

The Canucks, who are only the third CONCACAF team to qualify for the last four in their debut Copa América appearance, found themselves on the back foot in the 22nd minute thanks to Julián Álvarez low drive from Rodrigo de Paul’s assist.

While Ángel Di Maria almost doubled Argentina’s lead with ten first-half minutes remaining, Lionel Messi was able to repeat Canada’s 2-0 defeat to Argentina in the tournament opener again on Tuesday evening.

After the game, Leo Messi stated his awareness that these games were his last and that he was enjoying them to the fullest. While admitting that making the final game for the second consecutive time was not easy, the team will enjoy every moment.

However, Di Maria revealed that he’s not ready to face his last game in the national team shirt.

“I’m not ready for my last game in the national team, but it’s time. Whatever happens in the final, I think I can leave through the front door. I gave everything. I always gave my life for this jersey”, Di Maria said.

Argentina will face the winner of the second semi-final between Uruguay and Colombia for a chance to retain the title they won in 2021.
