Another Madrid derby imminent after Copa Del Rey round of 16 draws

 

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will go face to face on Wednesday in a Super Cup semifinal fixture, which will be played at the Al-Awwal Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 

However, the two teams will have to prepare for another clash in the round of 16 of the Copa Del Rey. The draws for the 2023/2024 Copa Del Rey competition delivered mouth-watering fixtures on Monday, with the city rivals set to meet at the Wanda Metropolitan.

It’s a fixture that will see one of the big guns in the La Liga get eliminated. Already, of the sixteen teams in the round, fourteen of them are La Liga clubs.

Real Madrid got past lower league team Arandina 3-1, while Atletico Madrid beat Lugo 3-1 in their own fixture. FC Barcelona will play against one of the surprise packages at this level, Unionistas de Salamanca. The other lower league team in this round, Tenerife will face Real Mallorca.

Real Madrid will face Atletico Madrid on Wednesday in the semifinal of the Supercopa, with Ancelotti already stating his plans for the game. The Italian manager was able to see Turkey’s youngster Arda Guler in action on Friday for approximately an hour, and there’s the possibility that the teenager will feature against Atletico on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia.

Ancelloti also confirmed that French Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni would be playing in defense due to injuries to Eder Militao and David Alaba as Real Madrid tries to sort out their injury crisis.

“Tchouameni is a midfield pivot, only in an emergency will he be a centre back. But, in the next game, he will be a centre back”, Ancelloti said.
