Arsenal produced a stunning second-half performance to secure a convincing 3-0 victory over Lille at the Emirates Stadium, scoring three goals in just seven minutes to maintain their perfect start to the Champions League league phase.
After a frustrating opening 45 minutes, Mikel Arteta’s side came alive midway through the second half, with Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka all finding the net to deliver another important European victory.
The Gunners entered the contest full of confidence following their opening Champions League win against Napoli. However, they struggled to find their attacking rhythm in the first half despite dominating spells of possession.
Arteta made five changes from the team that defeated Leeds United 2-1 in the Premier League over the weekend. His attacking combination of Eze, Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres failed to create the expected impact before the interval.
Despite the lack of attacking sharpness, Arteta kept faith with his starting players rather than making immediate changes at half-time.
That patience eventually paid off in the 64th minute when Timber broke the deadlock. The Dutch defender received a well-timed pass from Madueke before producing a composed finish over Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer.
The opening goal transformed the contest as Arsenal suddenly found their attacking momentum.
Just three minutes later, Eze doubled the advantage with an excellent first-time finish after substitute Saka delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area.
Arsenal were not finished there, and Saka turned goalscorer in the 71st minute, calmly rolling the ball home to complete a remarkable seven-minute scoring burst.
The introduction of Saka, Kai Havertz and captain Martin Odegaard proved decisive, with all three substitutes making important contributions as Arsenal took complete control of the encounter.
What had initially looked like a difficult European evening quickly turned into a comfortable victory for Arteta’s men.
The result gives Arsenal two wins from their opening two Champions League matches, strengthening their position in the league phase and continuing their impressive form in Europe’s elite club competition.
Arsenal enjoyed a remarkable campaign last season, winning all eight league-phase fixtures before eventually suffering defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
Having already beaten Napoli and now Lille, the North London club have once again demonstrated their ability to deliver results on the European stage.
While their first-half performance highlighted areas requiring improvement, Arsenal’s explosive attacking display after the break showed why they remain a formidable force in the competition.
For Arteta, the victory offered another encouraging sign that his squad possesses both the quality and depth needed to challenge for Champions League glory.
