Arsenal defender Ben White has earned a recall to the England national football team for the first time in more than three years.
The 27-year-old has not featured for his country since March 2022, after leaving the squad during the 2022 FIFA World Cup for personal reasons and subsequently making himself unavailable for selection.
White returns as part of new head coach Thomas Tuchel’s expanded 35-man squad for upcoming friendlies against the Uruguay national football team and the Japan national football team at Wembley later this month. He replaces Jarell Quansah, who has withdrawn due to a thigh injury.
The defender last appeared for England in a 3-0 friendly victory over the Ivory Coast in March 2022.
His absence from international football followed a reported falling-out with assistant coach Steve Holland during the World Cup, after which he returned home early from the tournament.
Former England manager Gareth Southgate had attempted to reintegrate White into the squad during his tenure, even making contact through Arsenal’s then sporting director.
However, White declined to return at the time and remained out of contention until after Southgate and his coaching staff departed following Euro 2024.
Tuchel began efforts to bring White back into the fold soon after his appointment, with the player confirming his availability in 2025.
Although initial plans to recall him were delayed by personal matters and later a knee injury, the German coach has now followed through on his intention to include the versatile defender.
Despite limited appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League this season, White has featured regularly in their Champions League campaign.
His recall comes amid continued debate over selection choices, with Trent Alexander-Arnold once again omitted from the squad, extending his absence from international duty.
Ben White played a part in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, in a 2-0 loss.
