Arsenal to seek explanation over controversial Sunderland penalty

Arsenal are set to contact refereeing body Pro Ref to seek an explanation over the controversial penalty awarded to Sunderland during Saturday’s Premier League clash.

Referee John Brooks pointed to the spot after Ezri Konsa and Dan Ballard became involved in a physical tussle inside the Arsenal penalty area, with VAR backing the decision.

The decision angered Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who questioned why the penalty was given despite video review.

The Gunners boss described the decision as unacceptable and said major refereeing calls could significantly affect the title race.

“This is not acceptable at this level. I watched it 20 times, and I cannot find a way to understand how they think to give a penalty in that situation, or the way the VAR has to intervene. I’m sad that we have to discuss this after such a beautiful game, that at this level has the gravity of that. Because that changes the course of the season and it can cost you the championship.” Arteta said.

The Premier League Match rCenter said VAR checked and confirmed the on-field decision as a holding offense by Konsa.

Officials determined that Konsa had committed a foul on Ballard, although Arsenal believe greater clarity is needed on how the decision was reached.

The penalty ultimately did not cost Arsenal, as goalkeeper David Raya produced an outstanding save to deny Enzo Le Fee and keep the scores level.

Arsenal later went on to secure a 2-0 victory, with Bruno Guimaraes and Bukayo Saka providing the goals.

Several pundits supported Arteta’s criticism after the match. Former Wales defender Ashley Williams argued that Ballard had pulled Konsa down and insisted the incident should have resulted in a free-kick to Arsenal rather than a penalty to Sunderland.

Arsenal’s decision to approach Pro Ref reflects their desire for clarity over major officiating decisions, particularly as they continue their Premier League title defense.

The club is concerned that controversial calls could influence results and ultimately affect their championship ambitions.
