Celtic identify January midfield boost as plans for winter transfer begin

Celtic are already advancing plans to reinforce their midfield during the January transfer window, with a ball-winning midfielder featuring high on the recruitment list. 

The demand for greater physical presence through the center of the park has intensified after Sunday’s comprehensive 3-0 loss to Rangers at Ibrox.

Martin O’Neill conceded post-match that Rangers appeared physically stronger than his Celtic side, who found it difficult to assert control in midfield for large spells of the contest. 

The club had previously targeted a similar profile of player in the summer window after identifying the position as a priority area for improvement.

That potential deal ultimately collapsed when the financial demands escalated, allowing the player to secure a move elsewhere. 

As a result, Celtic entered the new season without the robust midfield option they had hoped to secure before the window shut. Focus has therefore shifted firmly to the winter market.

Insiders confirm that preliminary work on potential targets is already underway, as the club sseeks to add ball-winning capacity and physicality to the engine room. 

Importantly, Celtic remain determined not to force through a signing purely as a reaction to the Ibrox reverse. 

The emphasis will remain on identifying a footballer who matches the squad’s specific requirements and can deliver meaningful impact.

Sunday’s display simply underlined the existing concern. Celtic could not match Rangers’ physicality in central areas, and O’Neill’s team struggled to regain possession quickly after losing the ball. Callum McGregor, Mika Baur and Benjamin Nygren started in midfield at Ibrox, yet the overall balance of that unit has become a major talking point after the defeat.

The club clearly recognizes the need for further squad development, and midfield is one area earmarked for attention. 

Although the summer chance slipped away, the search continues. Celtic are already preparing for January in their bid to introduce the ball-winning presence currently absent from O’Neill’s midfield options.
