Arsenal’s title hopes hit by big hitting Manchester United

Manchester United stunned Premier League leaders Arsenal with a dramatic 3-2 victory at the Emirates Stadium, sealed by a spectacular late winner from Matheus Cunha.

The result denied Arsenal the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table and marked a second straight league win under interim head coach Michael Carrick.

The match was finely balanced from the start, with both sides trading possession and chances. Arsenal went ahead on 29 minutes when Lisandro Martínez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure.

United responded well and were level before half-time as Bryan Mbeumo finished confidently in the 37th minute to make it 1-1 at the break.

United emerged strongly after half-time and took the lead five minutes into the second half.

Patrick Dorgu latched onto a pass from Bruno Fernandes and fired home to put the visitors 2-1 ahead, quietening the home crowd and increasing Arsenal’s frustration as they struggled to break through a disciplined defence.

As Arsenal pushed forward, their persistence paid off in the 84th minute through another set-piece.

Goalkeeper Senne Lammens misjudged a crowded delivery and Mikel Merino reacted quickest, scuffing the ball over the line from close range to level the score at 2-2 and spark wild celebrations among the home fans.

Those celebrations were short-lived. Just three minutes later, Cunha picked up space 25 yards from goal and unleashed a curling strike into the bottom corner, a goal of outstanding quality that silenced the Emirates and sent the away end into raptures.

Arsenal threw men forward in seven minutes of stoppage time, but United held firm to secure a memorable win.

The result tightens the title race and underlines United’s resurgence under Carrick, while Arsenal are left to reflect on a costly setback in their pursuit of the Premier League crown.
