Manchester United defender Bruno Fernandes has claimed that the club has performed better than what the expectations were in the early stages of the season. The Red Devils are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table with 63 points in 34 matches and they have one point lead against fifth-positioned Liverpool but Erik Ten Hag’s team has one extra game in hand as compared to the Reds.
In fact, Manchester United were red-hot favorites to finish among the top four in the league but their last two losses against Brighton and West Ham haven’t helped them.
However, their destiny to finish among the top four is still in their hands, which will help them qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Fernandes recalled that not many were betting on them to finish among the top six teams and the team has already overachieved in the ongoing season.
The Portuguese told Sky Sports: “No one thought that (Manchester United) would be fighting for top 4. We know that now everyone thinks we have been great but I remember at the start of the season no one even put our team in the top six. It’s a good surprise for them.”
Meanwhile, Manchester United could not take part in the UEFA Champions League this season and they will be hoping to take part in the prestigious tournament in the next edition.
The Dutch tactician Erik Ten Hag deserves a lot of credit for getting the best out of his players and the Old Trafford-based club has come up with collective efforts.
Manchester United also lifted Carabao Cup in February and it was their first trophy in six years. The Red Devils will take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final on 3rd June while they will next take on Wolves on Saturday.
