Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone hints at Saul’s departure this summer amid interest from FC Barcelona and Manchester United

It is no secret that Saul has grown out of favour at Atletico Madrid. The Spanish midfielder had an underwhelming season last time out especially according to his standards. However, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has claimed that Saul is not happy with his role at the club and wants to leave Wanda Metropolitano this summer.

The Spaniard who has been with the Rojiblancos since the start of his career has attracted interest from clubs like Manchester United, Inter Milan and even FC Barcelona. Simeone believes that it is pretty certain that the Spain international will leave the club this summer.

Simeone in his latest interview with AS cleared everything regarding Saul’s situation at the club. He said, “Last season he (Saul) spoke with the club, with us about his needs and what he spoke about was the option of having a position on the pitch where he feels more important.

“And I consider that Saul became Saul by playing everywhere, but he or many of those around him see it as something negative,” Simeone added.

The Atleti boss points out Saul’s versatility and his ability to slot in as a right back adding more depth to the team. He also adds that the rumours and talks about him leaving the club are not at all baseless.

“He is very important for Atletico because he can play as a full-back, right-wing, midfielder. He gives us a lot of options to be able to count on him. He is a player who, in that version and playing how the coach needs him to, performs very well,” Simeone explaiend.

“We cannot put aside what is rumoured and talked about.

“If he has to leave, give him a big hug, wish him the best with the boys who gave us life and to continue being friends, as always. Either to Barcelona or elsewhere,” he concluded, claiming that saul may leave the club this summer.

FC Barcelona are the most interested suitor for the midfielder but a swap deal with Antoine Greizmann going the other way looks highly unlikely. We also cannot discount Manchester United’s interest in the midfielder as the Red Devils are eager to add more pieces to their midfield. With Paul Pogba’s future uncertain at Old Trafford Saul can be a worthy replacement for the Frenchman.
