Atlético Madrid defeat Real Madrid 2-1 to deepen Mourinho’s woes

Atlético Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in a fiercely contested Madrid derby on Sunday, further increasing the pressure on José Mourinho. 

The result leaves Real Madrid six points behind league leaders Barcelona in the LaLiga standings, while Atlético moved up to 16 points, strengthening their second-place position.

The encounter was marked by intense refereeing controversy, with Real Madrid questioning the failure to send off Atlético players in several first-half incidents. 

Challenges by Cuti Romero on Jude Bellingham and Kang-in Lee on Federico Valverde were argued to warrant red cards. 

However, the decisive disciplinary action came early in the second half when Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen was sent off following a VAR review.

Both teams approached the derby cautiously, aware that Barcelona’s perfect start to the season had left little room for mistakes. 

Atlético enjoyed 55 percent possession in the first half but struggled to create clear-cut chances. 

Real Madrid relied largely on counterattacks, with Arda Güler forcing a save from Jan Oblak in the 41st minute. 

Kylian Mbappé endured a quiet first half, managing just 23 touches and failing to register a shot on target.

The game changed dramatically after the break when Giuliano Simeone went down inside the penalty area following a challenge from Huijsen. 

The referee initially awarded a penalty, but a VAR review led to Huijsen’s dismissal. 

Alejandro Grimaldo took the resulting spot-kick as Atlético took the lead. 

The numerical advantage gave Diego Simeone’s side greater control as Real Madrid struggled to maintain their attacking threat with 10 men.

Atlético doubled their advantage eight minutes later when Jonathan David finished off a well-organized move following a pass from Giuliano Simeone. 

Mourinho tried to change the course of the match through substitutions, but Real Madrid continued to struggle to break through Atlético’s defense. 

Courtois made several important saves to keep his side in contention, including an effort from Cuti Romero, while Yan Diomande also missed an opportunity to extend the hosts’ lead.

Real Madrid eventually found a lifeline in the 89th minute when Antonio Rüdiger headed home from a Bernardo Silva free-kick. 

The goal set up a tense finale, but Atlético held firm against the late pressure to secure all three points.

The victory extended their strong home record against Real Madrid and left Mourinho facing further questions after a disappointing result in the capital derby.
