Atlético Madrid overcomes Valladolid with 4-2 win

In a thrilling match at the Metropolitano, Atlético Madrid secured a 4-2 victory over struggling Real Valladolid, surviving a couple of scares in the process. This win marks their eighth straight league victory on home soil against Valladolid.

The hosts dominated early proceedings, with Pablo Barrios forcing Valladolid goalkeeper André Ferreira into a smart save before putting the rebound wide. However, Valladolid shocked Atlético when they were awarded a penalty after Clément Lenglet handled a corner in the box. Mamadou Sylla capitalized on the opportunity, sending Jan Oblak the wrong way to score eight of his last nine club goals before the hour mark.

Atlético quickly responded, earning a penalty of their own just four minutes later when Javi Sánchez fouled Giuliano Simeone in the area. Julián Alvarez equalized with a well-placed shot down the middle, which Ferreira got his feet on but couldn’t keep out. The momentum shifted in Atlético’s favor, and Simeone put his team in front two minutes later with a stunning left-footed shot.

After conceding the penalty in the first half, Sánchez redeemed himself early in the second half with a deflected free-kick that found the net, drawing Valladolid level again. However, Atlético responded with quick-fire changes, and Alexander Sørloth nearly put them back in front with a header that went wide.

The turning point came when Atlético was awarded a third penalty, with Alvarez stepping up again and placing the ball into the bottom corner, sending Ferreira the wrong way. This sealed the win for Atlético, who added an insurance goal through Sørloth, who tucked in a rebound after Rodrigo Riquelme’s initial effort was saved.

The win sees Atlético close the gap to seven and three points to Barcelona and Real Madrid, respectively, in the title race. For Valladolid, the loss extends their streak of 11 successive away league defeats, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table.
