Barcelona face Frenkie de Jong fitness race ahead of Champions League opener

Barcelona’s injury concerns have deepened with confirmation that Frenkie de Jong is unlikely to feature against Valencia this weekend.

The Dutch midfielder was forced to withdraw from international duty with the Netherlands after picking up a minor knock during the break.

Head coach Hansi Flick and the club’s medical staff have agreed that no risks will be taken with de Jong’s recovery, ruling him out of Sunday’s La Liga clash at Mestalla.

Barcelona have already been without key players such as Robert Lewandowski, Alejandro Balde, and Gavi in recent weeks, adding to the team’s early-season challenges.

Attention now turns to whether de Jong can recover in time for Barcelona’s Champions League opener away to Newcastle United next Thursday.

According to reports in Spain, the midfielder is targeting that fixture as his return date, though his involvement is not yet certain.

The scheduling may play in de Jong’s favour, with the game against Newcastle falling on a Thursday. This provides the 27-year-old with additional time to complete his rehabilitation and reach full fitness.

Even so, club sources have stressed that he faces a significant workload in order to make himself available.

Barcelona know the importance of having de Jong in midfield at St James’ Park. Newcastle’s aggressive pressing style is expected to mirror the intensity that once overwhelmed Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and de Jong’s composure under pressure could prove vital in maintaining control for the Catalans.

The Dutch international, who is also in line for a new contract at Camp Nou, has long been regarded as one of Barcelona’s most press-resistant players.

His ability to progress the ball under pressure makes him a crucial figure for Flick’s tactical plans, particularly in high-stakes European fixtures.

While it remains uncertain whether de Jong will be ready in time, both the coaching staff and supporters will be hoping he can recover quickly.

With Barcelona under pressure to make a strong start in Europe, his availability could significantly influence the team’s prospects against a resurgent Newcastle side.
