Barcelona moved inches closer to the La Liga title after beating Real Madrid 2-1 on Sunday at Camp Nou, where the El Clasico was played on Sunday.
Xavi’s men knew a victory would take them 12 points clear of their closest rival, and the victory was what they recorded, although they had to wait till the last minutes of the game before recording the winning goal.
Real Madrid won the first leg 3-1 at Santiago Bernabeu, but the Los Blancos have lost two other El Clasico played since then, including the Supercopa final in Saudi Arabia and the first leg of their Copa Del Rey semi-final game.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men have also been inconsistent in La Liga, which allowed Barcelona to create an eight-point gap before Sunday’s fixture.
Ronald Araujo opened the scoring after nine minutes with an own goal as Real Madrid took the lead, but Sergio Roberto levelled the scores for Barcelona just before halftime.
Marco Asensio scored in the 81st minute, but his goal was cancelled for offside by the VAR before Frank Kessie got the late winner. Barcelona has now established a 12 points lead with twelve matches left in La Liga going into the international break.
Both sides will meet again on April 5 in the second leg of their Copa Del Rey fixture at Camp Nou, but before then, Barcelona will travel to Elche after the international break, while Real Madrid will host Real Valladolid.
If Barcelona are able to keep their 12 points lead to the end of the season and win La Liga, it will be the first time since the 2018/2019 season that the Blaugrana will be winning the title.
However, Barcelona manager Xavi is not getting carried away with the results stating that the league is undecided.
“The league is not decided, but it’s a huge win. I think we deserved the win, and we were better than Real Madrid; we created more opportunities.” Xavi said.
