New Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann wants Leon Goretzka to stay at Bavaria amid interest from Manchester United. The 26-year-old joined Bayern in 2018 from Schalke and has been a pivotal figure for the German giants in their treble winning season. Goretzka was also a part of the German side that got eliminated in the round of 16 by England in the current European Championships.
Goretzka is entering the final year on his current contract and hence Manchester United have been heavily linked with the German international. However, Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn has assured the fans that the former Hoffenheim midfielder is on good terms with the club and will extend the contract very soon.
Nagelsmann also wants the midfielder to stay at the club for this season and beyond.
“Leon is an important player for us. I would be happy to work with him for many years,” he told reporters at his first press conference in charge of the German giants.
“I think very highly of him. He is one of the most dangerous midfielders in the world. Everyone likes to have him in their team.”
Nagelsmann also has high hopes from Leroy Sane who has not had a great time with club and country in recent times. The former Manchester City winger joined in2020 started 18 out of 32 Bundesliga appearances netting only six goals. he has failed to replicate his Premier League form in Germany which has led to widespread criticism. However, Nagelsmann feels that he can help the 25-year-old regain his confidence. The former RB Leipzig manager trusts the talent and the ability that Sane has and believes that the winger will come back stronger.
“It would be good for him if we left him alone in the media. He has outstanding qualities, incredible speed and is one of the best in one-on-one situations. He has a good finish and is also strong in link-up play,” he said.
“It’s about bringing his quality on the pitch and increasing his output. That is important, especially against opponents who are in a deep position. I’m not a wizard either, but I want to show him in training which spaces he has to stand in. We have already had contact.
“I’m sure we’ll see a stronger Leroy Sane, who will have a big impact on success at Bayern,” Nagelsmann concluded.
