Borussia Dortmund seal Champions League return

While the Bundesliga title may have eluded Borussia Dortmund once again, Niko Kovac’s side have secured Champions League football for next season thanks to a stunning 4-0 rout of Freiburg at Signal Iduna Park.

The victory was a statement of intent from the hosts. It moved them five points clear of RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga table and created a decisive 10-point advantage over fifth-placed Hoffenheim.

With three matches still to play, qualification is now beyond doubt for the 2026-27 season.

The game exploded into life early on. In the eighth minute, Maximilian Beier latched onto a long ball from Ramy Bensebaini and coolly beat Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu to give Dortmund the lead.

Just six minutes later, Julian Brandt’s lofted pass set up Serhou Guirassy for his 20th goal of the season in all competitions. The clinical finish made it 2-0 and had the crowd roaring.

Bensebaini then got in on the act just after the half-hour mark. He powered a header past the keeper from Julian Ryerson’s corner to make the score 3-0 going into the break.

Freiburg tried to fight back after halftime. Lukas Kubler thought he had scored in the 54th minute, but VAR correctly ruled him offside.

Dortmund kept their composure and put the game to bed late on. Fabio Silva scored the fourth goal with three minutes remaining, ensuring a comfortable win.

The home fans erupted in joy, safe in the knowledge that Champions League football awaits them next year.

This result showcases the attacking talent at Kovac’s disposal. Beier, Guirassy, Bensebaini, and Silva all contributed to a memorable afternoon. Despite the title slipping away, the team has achieved one of their main objectives.

They can now enjoy the final games of the season and look ahead to competing against Europe’s best clubs.

The future looks bright for Borussia Dortmund as they return to the Champions League stage.
