Carrick to remain Manchester United manager for Chelsea clash

Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for their Premier League trip to Chelsea this weekend, despite growing pressure following the club’s poor start to the season.

The 45-year-old has been given an opportunity to turn the team’s fortunes around after a disappointing run of results.

Carrick supervised training on Tuesday as United prepared to end an eight-match winless run in all competitions.

Their latest setback was a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, leaving the club just one place above the relegation zone and intensifying questions about the manager’s future.

United’s hierarchy have reportedly considered potential replacements, including former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

However, the club has decided to give Carrick more time to revive the team’s form, starting with Saturday’s match at Stamford Bridge.

Carrick initially took charge on an interim basis in January following Ruben Amorim’s departure. He was appointed permanently in May after guiding United to Champions League qualification and a third-place finish.

However, his team has struggled this season, recording just one victory in their opening eight Premier League matches.

Tensions have also emerged within the squad, with defender Lisandro Martinez criticizing the club’s board over a lack of investment and captain Bruno Fernandes questioning Carrick’s tactics after a heavy Champions League defeat by Como.

Fernandes was subsequently left on the bench for the Bournemouth match and did not feature.

Despite the disappointing results, United supporters chanted Carrick’s name after the Bournemouth defeat, although the players were booed as they left the pitch.

Carrick said the team’s performances had not been good enough and acknowledged the players were in a difficult period, while thanking supporters for their backing.

Questions remain over whether Carrick can secure a longer-term future at Old Trafford, with crucial fixtures against Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa approaching.

Saturday’s match could prove significant as United seek to regain form, ease relegation concerns and restore confidence after a bad start.
