Celtic get the best of Aberdeen

Dafabet sponsored Glasgow Celtic were hosting the then third placed Aberdeen on Saturday evening at Celtic Park, only three days after beating Hearts on the road to go five points clear of Rangers on top of the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic showed no signs of tiredness and took the game to their opponents from the kick-off but were close to missing out on the three points after a brilliant display by the visitor’s goalkeeper Joe Lewis and the defense.

The pressure paid off in the end though, and Celtic kept their distance to Rangers in five due to 2-1 victory.

Celtic showed determination from the beginning as they started off by piling on the pressure in the offensive end and managed to create goal scoring chance after another.

The home team rattled the cross-bar from a corner already earlier, before on the 7th minute Christopher Jullien found the net from the corner kick on the opposite side.

Aberdeen struck back like a lightning from the sky and out of nowhere. Sam Cosgrove rose highest inside the box and nodded in the cross sent by Niall McGinn pulling the visitors even on the 35th minute. The home team kept on the pressure and allowed only that single effort leading to the goal for the visitors.

Celtic took a hefty 15 shots in the first half, but only scored the one.

In the second half the hosts went for the jugular, as expected. Still not allowing Aberdeen to get past the half-way line, Celtic pushed on and had Aberdeen defense constantly on their toes.

The finishing left a lot to be desired for though and Joe Lewis definitely deserved his paycheck in Aberdeen goal. It was Odsonne Edouard who finally broke the tie on 66th minute after a perfect pass by Ryan Christie and a one-touch placed shot in the lower corner of the net.

Aberdeen missed out on the chance to claw their way back in the game, with Sam Cosgrove’s violent tackle in the offensive end seeing the goal-scorer sent off in 69th minute.

There was no question of the better team, as Celtic took the chances 28 to 2 and the shots on goal 11 to 1. Celtic will next face St. Mirren on Boxing Day, before the Old Firm ending the year on 29th of December.
