Celtic’s £2m Ta Bi transfer in doubt amid knee injury fears

Celtic’s pursuit of Ivorian winger Jocelin Ta Bi has hit a major roadblock, with emerging fitness issues threatening to derail the £2 million deal.

The 20-year-old, currently with Israeli club Hapoel Petah Tikva, was on the verge of joining the Scottish Premiership champions, but recent medical checks have raised alarms over a knee injury that may necessitate surgery.

Ta Bi last featured for his team on December 15, playing just 25 minutes in a 2-2 draw against Hapoel Tel Aviv before being sidelined.

Reports indicate the injury is more severe than initially thought, prompting Celtic to reassess their options as the January transfer window deadline looms.

The club is eager to bolster their right-wing depth, where South Korean international Yang Hyun-jun and veteran James Forrest remain the primary choices.

Interim manager Martin O’Neill has prioritized reinforcements in this position, alongside a new striker to address squad needs.

With Ta Bi’s move now uncertain, Celtic are eyeing alternatives, including Uruguayan winger Ignacio Laquintana from Brazilian side Red Bull Bragantino.

Laquintana, an international with flair and pace, could provide the attacking spark the Hoops seek.

Adding to the intrigue, Yang’s future at Parkhead hangs in the balance.

Despite netting twice in his recent outings, including a spectacular goal in the Old Firm derby against Rangers, the 22-year-old attracted interest from Birmingham City last summer.

Speculation persists that he might depart this month, further underscoring the urgency for new signings.

In other developments, Celtic have activated a recall clause for defender Stephen Welsh from his loan at Motherwell.

The 25-year-old Scot impressed with 17 appearances under Jens Berthel Askou at Fir Park, offering timely defensive cover amid potential squad reshuffles.

As Celtic navigate these challenges, fans will be watching closely to see if O’Neill can secure the pieces needed to maintain their title charge. The coming weeks could define the club’s season trajectory.
